The Hut Group, launched in 2004, sells non-perishable fast moving consumer goods with high levels of repeat purchase, and premium luxury products with higher average order values and strong consumer repeat purchase. It established its own in-house technology platform in 2006 and subsequently launched and acquired a range of retail sites entering entertainment and fashion in 2009, gifting and health & beauty in 2010 and sports nutrition in 2011. Most recently it has entered the cycling and diet sectors.
In June 2011, the Group launched a new division (Technology Services), focused on the provision of business to business software and ecommerce platform services from its in-house technology platform with media and brand owners.
The Group is privately owned, profitable and will turnover in excess of £200m 2013.
The Hut Group hired Anthony Silver from NEF Class of 2013.
Anthony Silver is an LSE graduate (2012) who started his entrepreneurial journey at the age of 13, importing limited edition football boots from the USA and starting his own window cleaning business alongside. When arriving at LSE, he soon recognized that even the best student entrepreneurs were finding it difficult to secure opportunities to pitch to investors, let alone actually raising capital for their businesses.
As a result, he founded European Student Startups, the continent’s first angel & venture capital competition exclusively for students. In the 2 editions so far, ESS has attracted over 300 applications from 34 countries, and is set to continue offering a unique proposition to students and investors alike with ESS2014.
At The Hut Group, Anthony has worked on multiple external and internal projects and in various roles.
On one of his first assignments, he was as an Account Manager and worked directly with the CEO of Technology Services, the Technology Lead and global and territory managers for development, to launch and rollout a B2B e-commerce web platform for Unilever’s Lipton brand. Anthony is currently close to securing another solution for Unilever based on the Lipton solution which will secure six figure revenues for The Hut Group.
Alongside this role, Anthony was a Project Manager for developing and implementing a new online display advertising strategy for the Daily Mail’s loyalty scheme – the Mail Rewards Club, where he doubled the revenue and profit being generated previously by an external agency.
His next assignment was in the capacity of a Commercial Manager working with the CEO of Technology Services, multiple team members within the The Hut Group’s Retail divisions and senior executives at Hearst. In this role, he was involved with process integration and business development with Hearst Magazines UK, particularly focusing on increasing traffic and conversion of readers from Men’s Health magazines to the Men’s Health online Store. This meant close liaison with the senior Men’s Health editorial and commercial teams to impact and influence their processes to ensure products and offers in the store were featured in the Men’s Health magazine and websites more prevalently.
About his job and experience at The Hut Group, Anthony says, “It has given me an amazing exposure to important clients. My experience at THG has taught me how to meet high expectations in the expected professional manner, with the personal touch. This has mainly come from my close work with my boss, the CEO of Technology Services at THG. I have learnt how to work both independently and as part of a team – I am one of only a handful of THG staff to be primarily based in London, with the rest being based at THG’s HQ in Cheshire. My experience in various roles has taught me about the B2C ecommerce industry, whilst also getting exposure to publishing, B2B, loyalty schemes and technology.”
Anthony is set to continue his job with The Hut Group.
Richard Chapple, Divisional CEO at The Hut Group, says, “The Hut Group took part in the NEF programme during 2012-13, employing Anthony Silver in August. Since then, Anthony has generated incremental net profits in excess of his peers, and his entrepreneurial work ethic and massive intellect means he’s also become a role model. We’re keen to engage with the NEF further and place more candidates into our business this year and in the future, as the quality of all the candidates I’ve met at the fantastic networking events and pitching days NEF holds will bring immediate positive impact to our business.”
